This is England (2006) Review for Media Class!

Shane Meadows' autobiographical film centres on young skinheads in 1983 England.
Shaun Fields, a young 12 year old skinhead, looks like he could barely hurt a fly with those hands. An older skinhead 'Combo' (Stephen Graham) jokes that he looks as if 'he came out of a box' comparing him to an Action Man doll, telling us about his apparent undersized character. After hooking up with a bunch of borderline criminal skinheads including 'Combo', in the long hot summer of 1983, he gets dragged into racist views of the National Front.  Shaun's loss of naivety is central to the subculture that is adopted by the white nationalists of '83 in this raw British drama. Shane Meadows creates an image of a young boy who needs identity and links it to something patriotic and racially conscious.

  1. I think that Shane Meadows shows us his unique vision of England in a deep and personal drama. He creates relatable and 3 dimensional characters who the audience can truly sympathise with.
None more so than young Shaun Meadows, played by Thomas Turgoose in a emotional and mature performance.

  2. I agree CineMAIN. Meadows manages to accurately portray the national turmoil and individual struggles of young people in the 1980's; a generation that were trapped between embracing other cultures and being afraid to commit to standing up against those that didn't. A perceptive comment made by Rhys too- the characters are likable and yet inherently flawed. They are realistic and appealing.

But, Year 12, what is the genre and what is Meadows' message? To represent a slice of life in the 1980's or to try and will a change in attitudes towards racism in today's society? Is there a preferred message to 'This is England'?

  3. Meadows aims to show the harsh realities of white working 80's britain, The title displays the message of the contents to be viewed 'THIS IS ENGLAND' everything he puts into the film is a reflection on typical 80's english culture.

He also shows a less fortunate side of england, its not your a stereotypical 'Tea & Scones' britain, he uses characters and enviroments that naturally 'scummy'. because the 80's were hard times for people in britian due ecnomic issues, these characters were not just sprung from imagination, Meadows had met, probably lived, amognst the types of characters in the film.

P.S. Thanks for a great summer xxx

  4. I think that Meadows is attempting to give the audience a realistic and raw view of what life was like for some parts the working class in England during the 80s and manages to do so. Also I think he is making a social comment when it comes to racism - he seems to be reminding the audience how bad it was during that time period while suggesting that we should never let racism become that bad again in modern society.

  5. okay film loads of gypsys though.. lawl but nah seriously Meadows portrays the image of what everyday life was in the 80's he displays how Britain was at their lowest at the time because of the fall of the economy- which suggest why poverty was a huge issue back then to add to that he also creates a message for the audience about racism, and how it reached its pinnacle at the time being and how Britain has moved on from this disgusting act. Overall meadows mirrors reality within the film which it makes it more relatable for the audience -Jeff

  6. in this is england, shane meadows shows how life was really back in the 1980's also showing the reality of white working men, the film generally shows alot of british culture, and meadows shows us how rasism was really bad and how he makes us feel for the people revieveing this racial abuse. he mirrors reality which makes the film relate to its audience, also it seems to be a very low budget film- kiran

  7. In this is England, meadows portrays British people as rough skin heads who are racist to every non english person including Milkie(who was also one of the skin heads). Doing this makes the audience think about what life was like for every non english person back in the 80's. The location of where the film is set seems to be a poorer area, with flats and quite alot of abandoned buildings showing that it seems like a low budget film- Frannii

  8. I think that 'this is England' is a really good representation of how life in the working class places of England really was. I think that the harsh reality of the gang culture and the uncalled for racism really showed a sad side to working class life. I think that the lack of foreign main characters (excluding milky) was a good thing because that's how it was back then, but on the other hand I think that its good that milky in a one of the main characters because it shows even though he was a friend, he was still treated differently because of his race. on the whole I think it was good because even if you didnt know much about the 80's you felt close to the characters and could almost comnnect with them and feel for them. i think that Shane Meadows has done a really good job of this low budget film, because although it lacked an amazing location with immense special effects, it more than made up for in realism and drama. - Sam Anderson

  9. Meadows tries to present an image to the audience of how life in the 80's for the working class really was. I believe he's trying to show us (the audience) how bad racism got for some people, he may also be trying to get across that racism should not be tolerated by anyone. The setting includes flats and quite run down places, this suggests that this film was low budget-Joe

  10. British filmmaker Shane Meadows looks back at his own youth in this semi-autobiographical comedy drama that examines skinhead culture in the U.K. It's the summer of 1983, and Shaun is a 12-year-old boy edging into teenage years without a father, his dad having lost his life the year before in the Falkland Islands War, how will he react with the hard hitting racism and the growing gang culture?
Working with a low budget, i believe that Medows has portrayed his life extremly well showing us as the viewer a raw piece of work- personally i believe these types of films are the ones that strike me the most and play with my emoticons especially with it being such a good representation of life in the 80's
Well done to Shane Meadows for shwoing us such a hard hitting piece of work on the budge he had- Farhana Begum!

  11. I did not enjoy this film because it had scenes which I found inappropriate to watch with my little brother. This says a lot about Shane Meadows style, he is not afraid to portray even the disturbing things that happened in the 80's. I especially didn't like the scene where the black guy gets killed TROLOLOL :) -Benjamin Elliot Connor

  12. My initial thoughts of the film came from the title "This is England" which made me think the film is focusing on life in England. The director captures the harsh environments of 1983 brilliantly with the dialects and swearing but also the crampt conditions and how he presents the characters.
While watching the film, the atmosphere became uncomfortable because of the racist comments and how bluntly they come about. As a viewer, you can relate to some of the characters who seem unhappy with these comments too.
I agree that Meadows is making a comment about racism but i also think he' trying to put across his own experiences and thoughts about life from that time. -Christina
